Fakaofo women dominate Atafu in opening Touch Rugby rounds
The Women’s segment of the 2017 Tokelau Games opened yesterday with Fakaofo playing Atafu in both the A and B divisions.
In the B division, the game see-sawed throughout with Fakaofo the more structured team scoring tries from set moves and slick skills. On the other side, the Atafu women proved to be lethal from long range scoring two of their tries in that manner.
With the scores tied at 4-4 all at the death, Fakaofo strung together another impressive move. It was a quality team effort executed with skill and at pace that put Malia Keresoma into space at the right wing. She didn’t make a mistake as she dove full length into the sand in front of an ecstatic Fakaofo camp to score the winning try.
In the A division, Team Fakaofo again displayed good structure and confidence in their systems to score from the very first movement of the match. But Atafu showed they were up to the challenge by replying instantly with a try themselves. However, even though Atafu kept in touch early-on by replying to every Fakaofo try, it was evident they were on the back-foot and flustered under pressure.
This was the difference between the two teams, when the pressure was applied Atafu were the more likely to make errors. While Fakaofo showed composure in defence to repel the many Atafu attacks on their line.
The only question mark on Team Fakaofo was whether their fitness would hold as the game got to the business end. That question was duly answered with Fakaofo scoring late in the match to run out comfortable 11 to 8 winners.
Today, both Fakaofo teams will have a bye waiting to find out who their opponents will be tomorrow. They will face off against the winners of the Nukunonu vs Atafu matches being played this morning.
Women’s B: Atafu 4 – 5 Fakaofo
Women’s A: Atafu 8 – 11 Fakaofo
